Presentation Learning Objectives:
Describe how eating disorders and malnutrition may present during a Nutrition Focused Physical Exam.
Identify ways trauma history and power dynamics can influence patient responses to physical examination in eating disorder care.
Apply trauma informed strategies to conduct and modify the NFPE to reduce distress and support patient autonomy.
Speaker:
Nolan Buland is a Registered Dietitian at Golisano Children’s Hospital, where he provides nutritional care to pediatric patients with eating disorders across inpatient and behavioral health settings. He also provides outpatient eating disorder care in Lexington through Bluegrass Nutrition Counseling working with pediatric and adult clients. Nolan earned his Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from the University of Kentucky, completed his dietetic internship through the University of Kentucky Coordinated Program in Dietetics, and later earned his Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Kentucky. Nolan’s clinical interests include pediatric malnutrition, the managing refeeding syndrome, trauma informed care, and advancing the role of dietitians in eating disorder treatment. He approaches eating disorders through an etiology-based lens, viewing them as maladaptive solutions rather than problems, with the goal of better understanding how these behaviors serve patients and clients.
